Elective CAS

You can join every single CAS of our programme. If you decide to take the whole MAS digital Clinical Research programme you have different options to add a third CAS to the mandatory CAS ETH in Digital Clinical Trials and the CAS ETH in Digital Health.

CAS ETH in Regulatory Thinking

Participants of the MAS ETH in digital Clinical Research programme can choose this CAS ETH in Regulatory Thinking as their third CAS programme or book it separately.

RegulatoryExperts@ETH offer the course Certificate of Advanced Studies Regulatory Thinking (CAS ETH RT). The participants learn in an interactive process why regulatory thinking matters and that it can be fun too. Regulatory for the sake of regulation is not what we want to convey. The CAS ETH RT is developed for medical doctors, engineers, and other professionals. The next course will start in autumn 2024.

CAS ETH in Technology and Public Policy: Policy Process

Participants of the MAS ETH in digital Clinical Research programme can choose one of the two CAS ETH in Technology and Public Policy courses as their third CAS programme or book them separately.

The CAS ETH in Technology and Public Policy (CAS ETH TPP): Policy Process degree equips participants with essential skills in public policy analysis by focusing on how to systematically analyse, design and manage policy-making processes. These skills complement their natural science or engineering backgrounds and enable them to thrive at the interface between technology and public policy.

The ETH programme combines general skills in policy analysis with opportunities to apply these skills to the policy issues that interest programme participants or to problems that are relevant in their professional settings (e.g., mobility, energy, public health, the digital space, urban planning, environment, sustainability, security).

The CAS ETH TPP: Policy Process degree is only offered in the spring semester of uneven years (e.g., 2023, 2025). It consists of three modules: (1) Technology, Society, Markets, and the State; (2) Public Sphere and Stakeholders in Policy-Making; (3) Communication and Negotiation. The modules take place between the end of January and the middle of June.

CAS ETH in Technology and Public Policy: Impact Analysis

Participants of the MAS ETH in digital Clinical Research programme can choose one of the two CAS ETH in Technology and Public Policy courses as their third CAS programme or book them separately.

The CAS ETH in Technology and Public Policy (CSA ETH TPP): Impact Analysis degree equips participants with essential skills in technology and public policy analysis. The primary focus lies on assessing technology-related policy options in terms of their expected and actual effects. These skills are essential to identify appropriate policy designs. These skills complement their natural science or engineering backgrounds and enable them to thrive at the interface between technology and public policy.

The ETH programme combines general skills in policy analysis with opportunities to apply these skills to each participant's set of technology-related knowledge and policy problems in their professional field (e.g., mobility, energy, public health, the digital space, urban planning, environment, sustainability, security).

The CAS ETH TPP: Impact Analysis degree is only offered in the spring semester of even years (e.g., 2024, 2026). CAS ETH in Applied Statistics

Participants of the MAS ETH in digital Clinical Research programme can choose this CAS ETH in Applied Statistics as their third CAS programme or book it separately.

Statistics come into play when you need to do more than just observe individual cases. With the help of statistics, you can make informed, and therefore better, decisions regarding problems that relate to aggregates or mass phenomena or affect entire populations.
In clinical research, data forms the basis of evidence-based knowledge and of decisions that affect the well-being of patients. This data is obtained through measurements, observations and surveys. It is subject to uncertainties and random variability. Broadly speaking, the methods for analysing such data make up the subject of statistics.

The CAS ETH in Applied Statistics is aimed at professionals who are frequently confronted with statistical issues as part of their daily work, including scientific researchers, people who work in development departments and consulting firms, and those who hold corresponding positions in service and administrative companies. The CAS provides a practical introduction to the fundamentals of data analysis and to various modern methods, including machine learning.

The CAS ETH in Applied Statistics for your MAS ETH diCR programme offers:

  • a hands-on introduction to both the basics of data analysis and modern methods, including machine learning
  • direct application of the learned methods using the statistical software R
  • practical sessions specially designed for the course
  • compatibility with professional life; lectures are always held on the same day (Monday)

The CAS ETH in Applied Statistics is hosted at the ETH Department of Mathematics (D-MATH) and is held biannually. Some of the lectures and practical lessons are conducted in German. The next course will start in Spring Semester 2025.
